How to prepare for the Duolingo English Test

The Duolingo English test is a great way to test your language skills from the comfort of your own home. However, there are some specific conditions that must be met in order for the test to be considered valid. The following are some of the rules that must be followed while taking the test:

  • Use the exact name as per your Government Identification.
  • Sit in a quiet room with proper lighting.
  • Your eyes and ears should be clearly visible.
  • Looking away or moving from the screen is not allowed.
  • Use a computer with a built-in camera and not an application.
  • Do not use mobile phones at the time of the test.
  • No external microphones or speakers should be used during the test.
  • No papers or books should be bought in during the test.

Pattern for the Duolingo English Test

The Duolingo English Test is a quick and easy way to test your English skills. The test has three parts: a setup stage, an adaptive test, and a video interview.

1. Setup Stage

The candidate is given five minutes before the test to set up and check the system requirements. This time is set aside to make sure everything is in working order and that the camera, speakers, and microphone are working properly. The candidate is then asked to display their government-issued ID clearly before proceeding to read and understand all the test guidelines.

2. Adaptive Test

An adaptive test is the second stage of the Duolingo English Test. The test lasts for 45 minutes, and it consists of writing, reading, and speaking skills. There's no specific order in which the test is administered. The questions are posed in random order, but as the test progresses, they get harder. The complexity increases as you move forward through the test.

3. Video Interview

The last part of the test is an ungraded video interview. This includes a ten-minute interview that's conducted with you. Ensure that you have clear audio, sit in a way that they're framed correctly in the center of the camera, and be confident and clear in your response.

Types of Questions

Reading Test

In this section, you are given a passage in English and challenged to read it by selecting the words in English. For every few questions, there will be one or two missing words that you need to choose from a multiple-choice set of answers. Some passages introduce specific rules for how the candidate has to read them (for example, some words must be treated as having ties or should not be counted as part of the number of letters). This section is timed, and you must follow the same, or else the screen could move on without recording their answer.

Listening Test

The second part of the test is to listen to sentences and type out the English words. This is followed by the lines spoken in English, and you have to type them out in English.

Writing Test

In the writing test, you are given a photo and expected to write about it in a sentence or two.

Speaking Test

You'll have to listen to an audio recording, and then you'll be prompted to speak out your answer. You'll have 20 seconds to replay the prompt, so take a good listen. The reading portion includes a picture with instructions on looking at it for 20 seconds and then voicing your thoughts. Overall, prepare yourself for four exercises during this interview.

The Duolingo English Test costs $49 USD. The Duolingo application on the phone has all the other pertinent details you would need to know in order to take the test. AECC Global Philippines wishes you the best of luck as you prepare for the Duolingo English Test.
