You may be wondering what the best way is to obtain permanent residency in Canada as an international student. You will be happy to know that you have multiple options and that you are also awarded additional points for having studied and worked in Canada. This increases your chances of being invited to apply for PR sooner than other applicant categories.
It is important to take into account the province in which you want to settle and any restrictions that may apply to your case when making your decision. For example, if you graduated from a different province, there may be some restrictions in place.
Here are some of the basic information which you should know before applying for Canada PR:
- Canada PR requirements for age must be between 21 to 55 years.
- Canada PR card is eligible only for 5 years.
- You should have language ability in English or French on the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB).
- Canada PR card renewal processing time is about 90 days. New PR cards may be issued within 45 days. The IRCC website will provide accurate processing times on their website. It may take up to 6 months depending upon the number of applications IRCC is working on and complex cases may take up to a year to process.
- If you apply for permanent residence, you must have an immigration medical exam. Canada PR medical is valid for up to 12 months
If you're hoping to work in Canada after graduation, you'll need to apply for a work permit through the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWP). Only graduates of designated learning institutions (DLIs) are eligible for the PGWP, so be sure to check the eligibility requirements before applying. Even if you're not eligible for the PGWP, there may still be other opportunities to work in Canada after graduation.
Canada's Express Entry program is designed to choose skilled workers who will contribute most to the country's economy. The program manages applications for permanent residence from skilled workers all over the world.
If you want to apply for the Express Entry system, here's what you need to do:
- First, make sure you meet the eligibility requirements for one of the three programs. You can also take an online test to check if you're eligible.

- Major Group 92, processing, manufacturing and utility supervisors and central control operators
- Minor Group 632, chefs and cooks
- Minor Group 633, butchers and bakers
You must meet the following minimum requirements to be eligible to apply under the Federal
Skilled Trades Program:
- With at least 2 years of relevant work experience within the last 5 years
- Must meet the job requirements for the chosen skilled trade
- With a valid job offer for at least one year or a Certificate of Qualification in the chosen skilled trade issued by a Canadian authority
- No education requirement but can improve your Express Entry score if you have one
- Valid language test with scores of at least CLB (Canadian Language Benchmark) 5 for speaking and listening and at least CLB 4 for reading and writing
- Proof of Funds (only if you don't have a valid working permit or a legitimate job offer for at least one year)
- Admissible to Canada
- No plans of living or working in Quebec
Federal Skilled Worker Program
This program applies to the following job categories:
- Managerial jobs (skill type 0)
- Professional jobs (skill level A)
- Technical jobs and skilled trades (skill level B)
You must meet the following minimum requirements to be eligible to apply under the Federal Skilled Worker Program:
- With at least 1 year of paid and relevant work experience within the last 10 years
- Valid language test with scores of at least CLB 7 in all four skills
- An education equivalent to at least a diploma from a Canadian high school or post-secondary school
- No plans of living or working in Quebec
- Proof of Funds (only if you don't have a valid working permit or a legitimate job offer for at least one year)
Canadian Experience Class
This program is for skilled workers in Canada who want to become permanent residents.
You must meet the following minimum requirements to be eligible to apply under the Canadian Experience Class:
- With at least 1 year of skilled work experience in Canada which means jobs under the following categories: managerial jobs (skill level 0), professional jobs (skill type A), and technical jobs and skilled trades (skill type B)
- With work experience legally obtained in Canada
- No education requirement but can improve your Express Entry score if you have one
Valid language tests with scores of at least CLB 5 for NOC B jobs and CLB 7 for NOC 0 or A jobs
- Admissible to Canada
- No plans of living in Quebec
